How to get an Athletic Scholarship
What does it take to compete in college?
College sports is always a step up in competition level from high school. However there are more than 1000 college athletic departments between the NCAA and NAIA. If you are a high school varsity athlete, and you are serious about finding a place to compete in college, there is almost always a college that you can find for you to continue your career. There are different competition levels, and coaches each have their own approach to recruiting, so getting on a team is really about finding the right fit, more than simply you being good enough.
Athletic scholarships are given out to fewer than 40 % of college athletes. That means that you may get an opportunity to compete that does not necessarily offer a scholarship. And most athletic scholarships are not for a “full-ride” to play the sport. But if finding a college team to compete for, and getting a scholarship is your goal, then you will need to know how to get recruited in your sport.
How Should I Contact College Coaches?
To get an athletic scholarship you will need to build a relationship with a college coach. Coaches offer athletes once they are certain they have the athletic ability, and the character they are looking for in members of their team. It normally takes some time to develop a relationship before an offer is given. More importantly, you will need time to determine which offer is the right one for you.
