Christopher Morales Williams is only 19, and the fastest man to ever run the 400 meter dash indoors!

If you have ever run track in college, than you know that the entire indoor season basically comes down to two meets. One is the NCAA championship, because it determines who is really the best. The other is your conference meet. However, if you sprint in the SEC, they might as well be the same thing, because many of the same men are running in both. It’s the reason why Matthew Boling lost the 200 meter indoors in 2023, and came back to win that event at the NCAA Championship two weeks later. But he is not in college anymore. So the Georgia Bulldogs lost him and all the points that he scores along with it. He even ran on their 4x400m relay alongside Elija Godwin who was only the fastest man to run the 400 indoors in all of college last year.

In 2024 nobody really knew what to expect from the Georgia Bulldogs in the 400 meter dash. Any normal program would likely struggle to replace two great athletes. But Christopher Morales Williams, clearly decided that he was up next. He won the 400 meter indoors at the SEC championships in 44.49 seconds. That is a not only the fastest time in the NCAA, but the fastest one ever recorded all-time. Considering that he is only a sophomore, that means he is even faster than Michael Norman was at this point in his career.

The truth is that Christopher Morales Williams, is not only the favorite to dominate the 400 in college anymore. He is now on the short list to contend for a medal in Paris in 2024. He will be representing Canada when he does it, but for now he is a Georgia Bulldog. And regardless of the uniform he is actually wearing, he was never supposed to be this fast!

How good was Christopher Morales Williams in high school?

At the high school level, Christopher would have rated as a mid-level 4 star recruit on SCArecruiting.com at the end of his senior year. That means he was really good but not the absolute best for his age. Five star recruits are really hard to get, because there’s about 40 of them across the USA alone, and that’s in total for every single event. What separates a 5 from a 4 star level sprinter is that the fives are top ten in their recruiting class in more than one event. That does not exactly describe Christopher, but the Bulldogs do recruit the best of the best every year. After his fast senior year season they had to feel pretty good about offering him to join their team.

The fact that Christopher Morales Williams runs for the Georgia, is a matter of fact that is incredibly misleading. The Bulldogs bring in multiple 5 star recruits basically every year in recruiting. They have 3 of the top 5 recruits in the class of 2024, and 2 of the top 10 in 2023. But they bring in a bunch of 4 star recruits to go with those fives. That is where Christopher likely fell on their recruiting board. Simply put Matthew Boling was supposed to dominate in college because he was the Gatorade national track athlete of the year. But you probably don’t know the name of hardly any 4 stars in the SEC because most of them are really only visible in the prelims or on a relay.

Christopher’s rise to become the fastest man in college

As a freshman that is exactly what happened to Christopher. He never broke 47 seconds indoors in the 400 meter dash or 46 outdoors. He never ran in a conference final, indoors or outdoors for the SEC conference. The only time you might have noticed him was on the 4x100m and 4x400m relays for Georgia in the finals both indoors and outdoors. In those races he ran alongside the men you actually recognize.

So when Christopher came back this season as a sophomore, nobody expected him to fill the shoes left behind by Boling and Godwin in the 400 meter dash. But he is clearly choosing to do way more than that. He beat Matthew Boling to open his season indoors in the 300 meter dash. Since then he has literally only lost one meet this season in the 400. The only reason that happened is because he ran like the old Christopher. But the new and improved version showed up to the SEC indoor championships. He not only won the event, but ran the fastest time ever recorded to do it.

The Bottom Line

It is unclear what the future of Christopher Morales Williams’s career will look like. But I do know that this is likely just the beginning. He was a 4 star recruit who honestly wasn’t even a sprinter that Georgia was that excited to bring in. They knew he had potential, but never could have thought he would ever get this good this quickly. Now he is the favorite to win any 400 meter dash he enters at the college level. He is supposed to win NCAA titles for as long as he stays in college, and 2024 is an Olympic year. Canada isn’t like America. It’s population is basically the same size as California! So we know that Christopher should be an Olympian. But he was never supposed to be a threat to make the finals, or contend for a medal. And now that he has proven that he clearly doesn’t care what the expectations are, I would not recommend you bet against him anymore.
