Is Grant Holloway the greatest 110 hurdler of all time?

Grant Holloway is the reigning world champion in the 110 hurdles. That is a sentence that has been true, every single year since 2019. He’s dominated the track so much that at this point, the only real question when he enters a championship event is “are you taking Grant or are you taking the field?” He doesn’t run the short sprints, although he probably could, and that means he doesn’t get anywhere near the media attention that he clearly deserves. But don’t get it twisted Grant Holloway is box office, and you had better make it a point to tune in when he is on the track. Right now we are witnessing greatness, the likes of which we hardly ever get to see. The only thing left on his resume for him to accomplish is to win the Olympics in the 110 hurdles, and break the World Record when he does it. He’s already arguably the greatest hurdler of all time, but if he pulls this off, we can take that word arguably out of the sentence.

How good was Grant Holloway in high school?

Grant Holloway competes in track and field the way we all wish we could, with all gas and no brakes, power sliding his way to the finish line. He honestly feels like he belongs in the cast of the Fast and the Furious more than anything else. It doesn’t matter whether you win by an inch or a mile, a win is a win. For the most part Grant Holloway always wins. At the high school level, Grant Holloway dominated the state of Virginia in both football and track and field. He was a 3 star football recruit with scholarship offers to consider, and ironically he was not the fastest hurdler in the nation in 2016. But that’s only because he was really good at practically any event he entered. He went 13.51 in the 110 hurdles, 21.27 in the 200 meter dash, 25 feet 11.5 inches in the long jump, and 6’10 in the high jump. He actually won the New Balance Indoor championship in the 60 hurdles but lost as a senior outdoors, but that would be the last time he would lose a championship race for a while.

How good was Grant Holloway in college?

Grant Holloway committed to compete for the Florida Gators and they were tempted to make him a decathlete. He probably could have been a better version of Ashton Eaton who is an Olympic champion. But they figured out he was so valuable in his best events that they let him do almost all of them at the SEC conference meet. That said, hurdling is clearly where he shined the brightest. During his college career, Grant Holloway not only broke the collegiate record in the hurdles at 12.98, but he went undefeated in NCAA championships from his freshman year indoor season until the time he went pro three years later. He never lost, not even once in an NCAA event. His only conference loss is to Daniel Roberts, who is a world championship medalist so I guess that’s understandable. Grant Holloway is hands down the best college track and field athlete of his generation because no man since the year 2010 has broken more records, won more conference medals, or NCAA championships than he has. It’s not even close, and remember he didn’t even compete in college all four years.

Will Grant Holloway win the Olympics?

After his junior year of college, Grant Holloway went pro signing with Adidas and hasn’t looked back ever since. He has literally won the World Championship every single year since he became a pro. He did it immediately after his college season ended in 2019 and hasn’t taken his foot off the gas. In 2021 he actually broke the indoor world record in the 60 meter hurdles, a season where he was prepping for the Olympics. Honestly, that is the only blemish on his entire career. In his one and only Olympics to this point he got a silver medal. Keep in mind that was a race that he was winning all the way until the final hurdle. If it wasn’t for that hurdle and that race, Grant Holloway would be perfect in every NCAA and World Championship event he has ever entered.

At this point we are honestly just waiting for Grant to avenge that loss. Outside of that and breaking the 110 hurdle record outright, there’s not much else for him to accomplish. He is literally one hundredth of a second off the world record right now, and the man has only been a professional for less than half a decade. He clearly hasn’t forgotten about his Olympic loss, and his revenge tour is going on just fine. In 2022 he won the World Indoor championship because why shouldn’t he? And continued winning world championships since.

The Bottom Line

What makes Grant Holloway so special is that just like Usain Bolt, he is the only man who comes to the races he runs and only has to be himself in order to win. He doesn’t need to run a PR, he just needs to do what he normally does, and that is almost always enough for victory. But he is not satisfied with that. Bolt has the world record in his events, and the Olympic gold medals to back it up. Of course he won the world a bunch of times, but nobody really remembers that, and honestly they don’t really care. So grab your popcorn heading into 2024 because there’s going to be a show that only Grant Holloway can put on. He’s the best hurdler the world has ever seen, and it’s not even close. But he knows there is only one race left that can prove it beyond any doubt.
